Women’s reproductive system is way more complicated than men. A single disruption either in process, reproductive organ or hormonal level can derail your dream of motherhood.

Ovulation is one of the most important phase and  the key for a successful pregnancy. It involves the release of eggs from ovaries. The matured eggs (ovarian follicle) are released from either or both the ovaries. After ovulation, during luteal phase the eggs are ready for the fusion with the sperm. Fusion of gametes ( egg and sperm) leads to tiny bundle of cells called embryos that if successfully gets implanted in the uterus results in pregnancy.

ART (Assisted Reproductive technology) treatments will predict the exact date of ovulation through follicular scanning but if you are not undergone such treatments you can still augment your chances of pregnancy by knowing your ovulation calender well.

How many days after your period do you ovulate?

Many women typically ovulate around 12 to 14 days after the first day of their last period, but some have a naturally short cycle. They may ovulate as soon as six days or so after the first day of their last period.

” Fertile window” is the most probable time of the month to get pregnant, though it varies from women to women. Usually, it’s a six-day window leading to ovulation including the day of ovulation itself.

*For a 28 days menstruation cycle it’s mid- cycle around 14th day from the first day of last period.

* For 21 days cycle the ovulation day can be just after menstruation that is 6th day from last period

*Few women ovulate sporadically early or late, in such cases it’s difficult to predict the ovulation day.

How can you track your Ovulation?

  • Basal body temperature (BBT) charting. This involves taking your temperature with a basal thermometer each morning throughout your cycle to record its changes. Ovulation is confirmed after your temperature has stayed elevated from your baseline for three days.
  • Ovulation predictor kits (OPK). These are generally available over-the-counter (OTC) at your corner drugstore. They detect the presence of LH in your urine. Ovulation may happen within the next couple of days after the result line is as dark or darker than the control.

The brand available in India is Innovita that is available in both Amazon and Flipkart at a price of rupees 500 for 7 strips.

How accurate are ovulation predictor kits?

When taken correctly, ovulation tests are approximately 99% accurate in detecting the LH ( luteinizing hormone) surge that precedes ovulation. However, these tests cannot confirm whether ovulation actually occurs a day or two later. Some women may have a surge in the LH hormone without releasing an egg.

  • Fertility monitors. These are also available OTC. They’re a more expensive option, with some products coming in at around $100 or Rs 2200. They track two hormones — estrogen and LH — to help identify the six days of your fertile window. This monitors are bit expensive but are more accurate in predicting those 6 days of fertile window.Inito brand is easily available online at Amazon and Flipkart in India for 10 strips

If you are planning to start your family then do take help of these kits and augment your chances of pregnancy. Technology is there to help us we just need the knowledge to use it for our benefit.
